Missing recordings or “Start Recording / Stop Recording” while drivingUpdated 2 months ago
If your dash cam is missing footage, creating very short files, or repeatedly announcing “start recording / stop recording” while driving, this is almost always related to the SD card, not a fault with the camera itself.
The most common cause is SD card fragmentation.
What is SD card fragmentation?
Dash cams constantly write, delete, and overwrite video files. Over time, this causes the SD card’s file system to fragment. When fragmentation becomes severe, the SD card can no longer write data fast enough, which causes:
• Recording to stop and start repeatedly
• Missing or very short video files
• Corrupted footage
• Incorrect timestamps
• The camera appearing to malfunction even though it’s powered correctly
Recommended SD card maintenance (very important)
To keep your dash cam running reliably, we recommend:
• Formatting the SD card once a month using the dash cam app
• Always formatting inside the app, not on a computer
(Camera Settings → scroll to the bottom → Format SD Card)
This helps keep the file system clean and prevents early fragmentation.
If formatting does not fix the issue
If you have formatted the SD card and the issue continues, the SD card is likely too far gone. Once fragmentation reaches a certain point, formatting may no longer help, and the SD card will need to be replaced.
Key indicator it’s the SD card (not the camera)
If you have ever:
• Replaced the SD card and the issue temporarily went away
• Noticed better behaviour with a new SD card, then issues returned later
This strongly indicates the SD card is the cause, not the dash cam.
Important notes about SD cards
• Micro SD cards are consumable items
• They wear out over time, especially in dash cams due to constant writing
• Even high quality cards will eventually need replacing
What to do next
Format the SD card inside the app
If the issue persists, replace the SD card
After inserting a new SD card:
• Power on the dash cam
• Perform a hardware reset (hold the power button until it turns off, then hold again for 30 seconds)
• Reconnect in the app and resume normal use
